  1. OS 3.9 claims to support searches within text viewed by the text.datatype; but how? [fixed in BB1]
  2. Will there be a Boing Bag 1 release for 3.9? If so, when and what will be in it?
  3. My copy of OS 3.9 doesn't include a registration card or a serial number; why is this, and how do I register?
  4. In the docs for ACTION on the OS 3.9 CD: AmigaOS3.9:Manuals/Action-English.txt (feature section) it claims "Support for INTEL INDEO 3.1 & 3.2 (IV31/IV32)". Yet when I try to play some movies, I get an "Unsupported compression: AVI_IV32!" error. Why? [fixed in BB1]
  5. When I run the Palette and Pointer Prefs editors, they're opening their own custom screens (I'm using 1024x768x16 screen for Workbench). Why?
  6. Where are the PowerPC datatypes on the OS 3.9 CD?
  7. Besides English, why aren't there updated language catalogs for new OS 3.9 features? [fixed in BB1]
  8. The version string for ACTION reads: "ACTION 45.3" (Internal test). Was this a mistake? [fixed in BB1]
  9. Is there a way to have certain devices in "Find" unselected/selected by default?
  10. I have some Photoshop Quicktime tutorial movies; when I play them with ACTION in a window on the Workbench screen (regardless of color depth), they are played in grey—not in color. Will this be fixed?
  11. Are there plans to make the OS 3.9 release notes available to users?
  12. Why can't I open any Preference editors when I boot without the Startup-sequence?
  13. Are there any other skins besides the default silver one available for PlayCD?
  14. Will there be any more Boing Bag releases for OS 3.9?

1.
Q: OS 3.9 claims to support searches within text viewed by the text.datatype; but how? [fixed in BB1]
A: When viewing text within MultiView (not AmigaGuide), simply hit the Return key, and a search window will pop up.
2.
Q: Will there be a Boing Bag 1 release for 3.9? If so, when and what will be in it? [Boing Bag 1 available]
A: Boing Bag 1 is available here.
3.
Q: My copy of OS 3.9 doesn't include a registration card or a serial number; why is this, and how do I register?
A: OS 3.9 does not ship with registration cards or serial numbers. The serial number entry in the 3.9 Registration area (which had been commented out) has been removed. [Markus Nerding, H&P]
4.
Q: In the docs for ACTION on the OS 3.9 CD: AmigaOS3.9:Manuals/Action-English.txt (feature section) it claims "Support for INTEL INDEO 3.1 & 3.2 (IV31/IV32)". Yet when I try to play some movies, I get an "Unsupported compression: AVI_IV32!" error. Why? [fixed in BB1]
A:

This is a mistake in the ACTION manual. Due to licensing issues, ACTION does not support the Indeo compression format/codec. For more information about this issue, contact László Török (his website is available here).

5.
Q: When I run the Palette and Pointer Prefs editors, they're opening their own custom screens (I'm using 1024x768x16 screen for Workbench). Why?
A:

These Prefs editors check how many free pens are available, and when there aren't enough pens, they open a new screen. This happens regardless of the screen depth (hi/truecolor or CLUT). On a 15-bit (or higher) screen the background images should not use any pens. The icons are the problem. Setting the icon quality to "Poor" or "Bad" in Workbench Prefs can help.

[Stephan Rupprecht]

6.
Q: Where are the PowerPC datatypes on the OS 3.9 CD?
A:

Due to the extremely tight deadline required to ship OS 3.9 by December 4th, only the picture.datatype is currently available for the PowerPC (and none of its sub-classes are PPC-enabled):

AmigaOS3.9:OS-Version3.9/Workbench3.9/Classes/Datatypes/picture.datatype (82,264 bytes).

This is a 'fat' binary, meaning it contains both 68k and PPC code, and will automatically use the fastest processor available. For other PPC datatypes, simply search any Aminet mirror for "warpjpeg", "warppng", and "warpgif". [David Rey/Remco Komduur]

The OS 3.9 picture.datatype offers a new scaling feature, and far better dithering (not really a concern unless you use 8-bit screens), and uses the PPC only for dithering or scaling, so you need to consider whether you're likely to use those features—if not, then it would be better to stick with the CyberGraphX one, simply because it's faster. [Oliver Roberts]

Stephane Guillard recommends installing at least the warpjpeg.datatype if you have a PPC card.

7.
Q: Besides English, why aren't there updated langauge catalogs for new OS 3.9 features? [fixed in BB1]
A:

The locale files can be downloaded from here.

8.
Q: The version string for ACTION reads: "ACTION 45.3 (Internal test)." Was this a mistake? [fixed in BB1]
A: Yes. This has been addressed.
9.
Q: Is there a way to have certain devices in "Find" unselected/selected by default?
A:

Yes; simply select/de-select the entries as you want them to appear by default, and select "Settings/Save Settings" from Find's menu.

[Rolf Max Rotvel]

10.
Q: I have some Photoshop Quicktime tutorial movies; when I play them with ACTION in a window on the Workbench screen (regardless of color depth), they are played in grey—not in color. Will this be fixed?
A:

ACTION currently does not support color playback in Workbench window mode under AGA. According to ACTION's author, Laszlo Torok, color playback will be supported in future versions.

[David Rey]

11.
Q: Are there plans to make the OS 3.9 release notes available to users?
A:

Yes. Current plans are to include the OS 3.9 release notes with the NDK 3.9 update.

[Martin Steigerwald]

12.
Q: Why can't I open any Preference editors when I boot without the Startup-sequence?
A:

There are several reasons for this:

Without running SetPatch, Workbench v45 cannot work as the old workbench.library in ROM will not been unloaded as it should.

Without classes and datatypes, ReAction-based applications will not work.

Amiga Inc./Haage & Partner do not provide support for manual "no Startup-sequence" system setups. Either know what you are doing, or:

USE YOUR EMERGENCY DISK

[Martin Steigerwald]

13.
Q: Are there any other skins besides the default silver one available for PlayCD?
A:

Yes. There are a number of third-party skins available from the following website.

14.
Q: Will there be any more Boing Bag releases for OS 3.9?
A:

Not likely with the future release of OS 4.0; but there are two archives for OS 3.9 available on Aminet written by Thomas Richter that are designed to enhance your OS 3.9 Boing Bag 2-installed system. They are as follows:

Please note that while these archives were completed by one of the OS 3.9 developers, they are not official releases from either Haage & Partner nor Amiga Inc.

There are also a couple of related items: The RemAPollo.lha archive has a directory in it containing some updates to OS 3.9 that apparently work well with non-Apollo Amiga systems. As always, use these non-official updates at your own risk. Finally, there is a list of files that an Amiga system correctly updated to OS 3.9 BB2 should have. You can use this list to check your own installation (again, this is a non-official list.)
